masterclass Tel Aviv University

Together with pianist Jean-Luc Fafchamps, I have been spending the night at the home of a young couple of musicians. Sivan Cohen-Elias is composer and her friend and future husband Yaron Deutsch is guitar-player. They are passionate about their art and very curious about almost everything, and on top of that also very generous hosts to be with. I only had a very short night of sleep. As always we are staying in private homes instead of at hotels and the evenings tend to become very long, especially in this region. People here are in need to share and ask about what happens outside of their country. Last night was like so many other wonderful nights spent over the last years. Many questions, discussions, sharing experiences and thoughts about politics and many more simple things of our daily lives. No time to sleep, because all too awake for the questions we all have. img_69961 This morning our musicians are giving a masterclass for students of the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music of the Tel Aviv University. The masterclass is organised around works prepared and performed by students of the Academy: György Ligeti's “Three Pieces” for 2 pianos and Morton Feldman's "Mme. Press died last week at 90" for ensemble. img_69921 The interest in the experience of our musicians with the contemporary classical music repertoire is big in this community of students. We have built this connection with the Tel Aviv University up since we started our masterclasses and conference-concerts in December 2003 and now represent an important connection for them to the European classical music of today. Bringing composers themselves, as we did last year with composer Georges Aperghis, surely makes a big difference too. The Buchmann-Mehta School of Music is in a very luxurious position, since its director Tomer Lev decided to develop a close and unique collaboration with the Israeli Philharmonic, thereby bringing some of the finest soloists and conductors to visit the faculty to teach and work with the student ensembles and orchestra. But the connection with the world of contemporary music is something which they still need and want to develop more. The worksessions with Ictus is helping them to do so. In the afternoon, a conference was given to the students by pianist-composer Jean-Luc Fafchamps on his own compositions. img_7011 In the evening we were invited at the home of my hosts Sivan Cohen-Elias and Yaron Deutsch for food and drinks, because going out for dinner was impossible because all restaurants were closed for commemoration day in Israel. It was our last evening in Tel Aviv and a wonderful one indeed, bringing together all our musicians, as well as friends saxophone-player Gan Lev, pianist Daniel Seroussi, violin-player Neta Rudich, journalist Noam Ben-Zeev and his wife Yaelle, and saxophone-player Ariel Shibolet.
