apprenticeships for Congolese and Mozambican students in Belgium

Music Fund is from April to June organising another series of internships for students related to our partnerschools in Maputo and Kinshasa. Thanks to the support of Music Fund, the first restoration atelier in Maputo opened its doors in April 2007. It is associated with the local partner school, the Escola Nacional de Musica. A similar restoration atelier will in July 2008 also open in Kinshasa, in cooperation with our partner there, the Institut National des Arts. It took place in the beginning of April and was given by Pol De Winter (piano) and Joris Buysse (wind instruments). This year's initiation course at the Institut National des Arts in Kinshasa will be the 2nd of its kind organised since 2007 (then only for piano-repair). It will take place from 28th June until 7th July 2008 and will be given by Pol De Winter (piano), Els Jageneau (guitars) and Pierre Helou (wind instruments). There is a huge shortage of professional restorers at local level. This is why a number of specialist craftsmen have been brought in to set up ateliers for the restoration, tuning and building of musical instruments in the local music schools. It is a unique opportunity for Music Fund to realise a ‘capacity building’ project that will hugely benefit music education. In this way, Music Fund not only provides musical instruments, but also the know-how needed to tune and repair them, through these training programmes which are being organised since 2006.
